my baby girl has been having trouble pooping for a couple weeks now. she has pooped a few times and they were really good poops but it has only been maybe once or twice a week. which i know can be normal. but today she had some poop in her diaper and it was hard balls of poop. so i know she is constipated. I called her doc and she recommended I give her some pedialyte. has anyone ever heard of this?

Pedialyte would help in the way that water would help us.  So it's not a horrible idea.

Maybe consider an infant glycerin suppository.

i'll try the pedialyte because i can buy that with food stamps. Im so broke right now lol. I just never thought to use that because people usually use that for vomiting or diarrhea. also her doc never said how much to give her. she will be six weeks old saturday but she is a preemie so her corrected age is 39 weeks and 5 days (gestation)

I wouldn't give her too much.  Do you bf or ff?  If she takes say 4 oz at a time, I'd give her maybe 2oz of pedialyte once a day.  It may or may not help.

I just switched to ff about a week ago.
she takes between 3 and 4 oz per feeding.
DH suggest a quarter of an oz of pedialyte after or before each feeding but that just seems like it would defeat the purpose.
he is worried about it screwing up her electrolytes

Formula will absolutely constipate.  You may have to switch formulas if it becomes painful for her.

2oz a day won't screw up her electrolytes.

yeah thats what i was saying. I have to get a referral from her doctor for it though because i get her formula through wic. and they want her on a 22 calorie formula until she reaches 10lbs or 6 months of age, which ever comes first. but i cant have her being constipated.
thank you i wasnt sure what to do.

When my Niece had the flu at 8 weeks her doctor told me to give her one ounce twice a day of pedialyte, she was 12 lbs

My son has had constipation issues since birth, finally after almost 3 years his doc gave him prescription merilax. We also use an over the counter laxative for toddlers and young kids. Which I like better BC it works not long after he takes it and will clean him out for a couple days. The merilax takes a few days to kick in.

Yes my son is going through the same thing and pedialyte was recommended and apple juice really helps him as well.
