Not sure if this has been posted, but I saw this on FB and it's a powerful message

I put this in D&D in case anyone has anything to add. Do you disagree? Do we already teach this message? Is there no reason to teach it? Are we right in focusing on women's actions instead of the attackers?

I think both should be taught, because no matter what someone is going to go against the grain. We are taught not to steal, kill, etc. Yet they have murderers and thieves. It's important to teach people NOT to rape, but it's also important to teach people how to protect themselves/prevent rape as well.

Rapist do. You can say don't rape until you're blue in the face, doesn't mean rape won't occur.

I agree. When I was in the military, we constantly had sexual assault briefings and they were always about avoiding being raped and how to report it if you were.

Exactly. I've seen a million ads and messages about not wearing the wrong thing. Not going to the wrong party. Don't be with the wrong people. Don't walk down the wrong ally.

I hear "no means no" as almost a joke anymore. I never see the amount of work that goes into teaching women to stay say go into teaching men not to take advantage and rape them.

How many people will tell their daughters all the do's and don't in keeping her safe, but almost none of them will explain to their son what is okay and what is NOT okay.

It's sad that we seem to think the best solution is to teach the victims how best not to become a victim, and they ignore the attackers.

very, very interesting.

And, to an extent, I see what she's saying. I have seen and been invited to many women's defense courses, gotten many warnings about how to spot and avoid dangers, etc, but my teenage brother is not as actively taught/told not to rape women.

I guess the logic would be, "well, it's morally wrong to rape and we instill morals in our son, therefore we don't have to worry about him BUT we are trying to protect our daughter from everyone else."

I feel like it's harder to say that your child might do something wrong, so you need to teach them to avoid it, at least on this big of a scale - where it's easy to say the rest of the world may do something wrong.

I'm trying really hard to articulate what I mean, but this is tough.

Rape can occur when you're wearing a habit, dude. Doesn't make it the victim's fault.

But why ignore it? That's the issue. By ignoring it and instead trying to tell women what they need to do differently you send the message that it's women's fault.

Also, no, rapists DON'T care. Lots of women get raped wearing the "right" clothes and doing all the "right" things.

People are going to do what they want regardless. Of course you don't and shouldn't rape, steal, kill, etc. Maybe I'm not getting it but that's my take on it.

Quoting Satan:" *sigh* You don't get it. It's cool though. Hopefully if you have boys you'll teach your boys not ... [snip!] ... be a problem. You know? Why teach girls how to not be raped INSTEAD of teaching the boys NOT TO RAPE. Do you get it now?"

I get it and I agree but I think BOTH should be taught. Boys should be taught NOT to do it, and girls should be taught how to avoid/prevent just in case.

They both should be taught. Boys should obviously be taught 'do not rape'. Teaching them to respect women and learn self control. But there are still those sickos out there who are going to do it. So teaching a girl how to protect herself is important as well.

I never said it was the victims fault. I seriously don't know how you got that out of my post.
