I will be 9 weeks tomorrow. I finally got to see my doctor for the first time last week. I was working on losing weight when I found out I was pregnant but none the less I am starting out this pregnancy at 205. My doctor told me that I shouldn't gain any weight at all during this pregnancy and he told me that I should actually try to lose weight. I was just curious if anyone else has tried and lost weight while pregnant and if your doctor actually encouraged it. I have always heard that you shouldnt try to lose weight while pregnant. I mean of course I have been eating healthier and I still walk around the neighborhood every night after dinner but my doc told me to join a gym. So if anyone else has been told this what did you do to lose weight? He told me he would be impressed if I was 9lbs lighter by my next appointment I dont see that happening!!!

I know someone who was about 225 when she got pregnant and when she delivered she was at 160ish. Her baby is as healthy as ever.

You're doctor is a complete quack, IMO. I was working on losing weight, too, when my test came back positive (I started at 170) and the doctor still wants me to gain about 15lbs. I went down to 165 at first (because I had next to no appetite and I was still really active), but I've gained 3 of it back, so I'm at 168 right now.

your doc is an idiot you should try to keep your gain to around 15-20 lbs instead of 20-25 if you are over weight that is what all the articles I have read say.

Agreed...I've never heard a doc recommend losing weight...maybe minimal gain or staying the same. If you lose weight due to better eating/exercise habits that's one thing...but it shouldn't be your goal to lose weight while pregnant.

Your doctor is nuts. I'm VERY overweight.. I started off at 275... the doc said he didn't want me to gain more than 11 lbs... but DO NOT TRY to loose weight.. while pregnant is NOT the time to loose weight.. HOWEVER.. my metobolism shot through the roof..and I lost right at 43 lbs! do I eat the healthiest? no lol.. If i don't have SOMETHING sweet everyday.. i'll die lol ( never had a sweet tooth before I got pregnatn either)

But DO NOT TRY to loose weight.. eat healthier of course.. walk of course..but do NOT diet.. your baby needs a LOT of different things that dieting will rob him/her of!

I am bigger than you and 13wks. I was also losing weight when I found out I was pregnant and all of my doctors (including my high risk doctor) told me not to lose any weight at all. I am seeing a nutritionist weekly and I am on a strict diet and they weight me every week. If I start losing weight they are going to change my diet to MORE food to try and keep me at my current weight. In the beginning I gained 15lbs due to the medications I was taking and suddenly not being as active.
Though it may just be different for me because I am diabetic. I do know of people who have had very healthy weight loss during their pregnancy and it was completely acceptable. I don't know about joining a gym but eating extremely healthy will help you shed pounds without even trying.
Whatever you do and whatever happens, Good luck!

I weighed a lot more than you starting out this pregnancy. I have put on 14 pounds and am almost at my 9 month mark. Your doc is completly insane! My doc did not suggest that at all! After this pregnancy I plan on losing a lot of weight so next time around I can have the cute lil baby belly and all that fun stuff.
