Are there any other Vegan or Vegetarian pregnant ladies out there??? What issues, if any, have you had related to your restricted diet? Any weird, not so veg. friendly cravings???
I find that my Doctor is very supportive of my Vegan diet, she just made sure I was getting enough protein and Calcium. I have been craving the worst foods ever. I think you crave comfort foods from your childhood when you're pregnant and uncomfortable. I have been wanting cheese, ribs, chicken nuggets etc. even though I have been a vegan for about 2 years and an off and on vegetarian pretty much my whole life.
Calcium: This has been a bit of an issue for me, I find it hard to force myself to take the calcium suppliments (they make my tummy upset) and I already have to take NINE pills a day for Iritable bowel Diseasee, and three more prenatal vitimins, plus the occasional tylenol and so on... so when the number of pills I'm taking climbs up close to the twenties I tend to give up heh.
Well I hope I hear from some other Vegan or Vegetarian mommy-to-be's or current moms and so on!!! I have tons of questions about first foods, school lunches, dealing with family, etc.
I was vegan when I was pregnant with 1 of my kids , vegetarian for 4 of them and the last 2 ... not so much - as I got older I found I needed meat so now I eat meat .
But I never had any issues inregards to diet when I was eating vegan/vegetarian.
I was a vegetarian during my first pregnancy. I struggled to keep my Iron up, but that is something Ive had to deal with my whole life. Are you vegan for moral reasons?
Thanks for the reply! I am pregnant for the second time, but this will be my first baby. I was a vegetarian with the first pregnancy and found that I HAD to have meat, it wasn't just cravings it was really a need. I think I was not handling the diet well and I was not getting the protein I needed.
This time around I had been eating a stable diet for a good amount of time, and other than random cravings, I am doing well! I am curious about how raising a vegan baby will be and if my diet shifts along with my new life. I hope it doesn't.

I was a strict vegetarian for 8 years when I got pregnant. I was having so many cravings for meat, hamburgers and salami mainly, that I finally caved. I did it in private hiding it from everyone for a while and then my husband busted me (he eats meat). I felt a lot of guilt regarding this at first but then later decided that if my cravings were that strong the baby must need it. Peanuts and beans and other proteins just didn't cut it. I'm having a c-section on Friday and I plan to go back to being a vegetarian then. Just don't feel guilty if you do decide to eat a little meat, trust your body, I believe we crave things for a reason. Good luck.
Yes, I am a HUGE fan of the "fake meats" haha. Not so much the cheese or chicken nuggets, but just about everything else!
I am a Vegan for many reasons, morally, ecologically, health, etc. etc. I DO plan to breast feed, so I won't have milk issues with the baby.
I agree that meat substitutes provide all the protein with a lot less fat and calories and also little to no saturated fats and no cholesterol. I've been overweight my whole life, and being a vegan is a really healthy choice for me and my family (my husband is also a vegan).

HAHAHA.... I've done that too! My husband likes to put CHOCOLATE soy milk in pasta sauce for himself (hurl).... boys are weird... go figure!
