It happens, not that often, but its not good either!
Meconium is normally stored in the infant's intestines until after birth, but sometimes it is expelled into the amniotic fluid prior to birth or during labor and delivery.
It happens when the baby is over due or in distress.
ETA: If they're in there too long, they'll come out green.
Yeah its called meconium and it is a sign of fetal distress. Meconium aspiration is the leading cause of full term babies going to the NICU.
its meconium, and from what ive heard, the baby needs to be delivered within like 24 hours. Its not safe! can cause infections. But yes, it does happen.
Here is a good link about it too!
It happened to me when I gave birth to my daughter back in October. She had breathed some of it in, and had to be suctioned out as soon as she was born.
It happened to me when I was born. I pooped in my own water. It can be dangerous
oh wow. i'm glad i asked about that. aww poor lil babies!
Quoting *Trying for a baby boy!*:
My last daughter had meconium in the amniotic fluid. When I had her they had a respiratory nurse in the delivery room so they could check to make sure she hadn't inhaled any. She was 4 days overdue, but the cord was wrapped around her neck twice so they think she was in distress too. Thankfully she hadn't inhaled any into her lungs and she was A-1.
