How to handle foster Q's? Awkward 5 kids; 2 angel babies; St Cloud, MN, United States 4637 posts

If you foster and are out in public, how do you answer the how many kids question?
We are already a bigger family, and my niece is old enough to understand the questions and answers.
What is the least awkward way to answer this one?

What are you asking exactly?
Like if someone says “how many children do you have?” I guess if I fostered, I would just tell them the number of kids I have, plus how many I am currently fostering. Or I would say “More than I can count!” And walk away

And why do strangers feel the need to butt into people’s business? Shy

If she is old enough to understand I would ask her. Does she want to be considered one of yours or separate? Let her know it is her choice because you love her like your own.

you can either include her in the number of kids you have or say something like "x number plus my niece lives with us" if she wants to be recognized as separate.

Well in some situations yeah. hahaha

If you are at a park though talking to some mom who you just met while watching your and her kiddos play she may say something like "so how many kids do you have? How old are they?" as small talk and I can't imagine even you would respond that way. 38

I would answer but with 4 plus kids a lot of people want to make other or further remarks after that and then I'll use it haha.  But if someone comes up to me in the grocery and is like OMG how many kids do you have... I'm going to say something snarky. It all depends on inflection of course though like you said.

I am so glad I live in an area where large families are slowing becoming more normal. No one even bats an eye at my rambunctious bunch or the fact I am pregnant with 4 already! It would drive me insane to get all the comments.

I wish I lived somewhere it was more common.  It''s like it's only acceptable in Hollywood and the rest of us peasants should only have 2 children. California love right there lmao

Coming from being fostered and having that feeling of wanting to belong somewhere and to someone, I would absolutely include her in the number, explanations not needed.

I don’t foster, but if you have 5 kids and a foster,  I’d say 6. It’s nobody's business and will probably make her and you uncomfortable if people ask more questions.
