Antibiotics, how long? .casper. Due September 27; 3 kids; 1 angel baby; Neverland, NJ, Christmas Island 1993 posts

DD is 6 and has chickenpox. She was prescribed antibiotics today because one of the spots on her leg has got infected. Her entire inner thigh is red and hot to touch. The doctor said with it being a skin infection, we need to take her straight to hospital if she becomes lethargic, shivering, high temperature that won't go down etc. He said to watch it in case it gets bigger. Well it has. But, she was only prescribed the antibiotics this afternoon, and has only had 2 doses (it's 4 a day). So how long should it take for the antibiotics to kick in? And at what point do I take her in with it still getting bigger? I'm obviously worried about her being seriously ill and don't want to wait around, but I also know that the antibiotics aren't instant. Advice?

I would give it at least 24 hours...and maybe mark how big the area on the leg is if you haven't already...ds1 had what the Dr thought was an infected lymph node on his face a few years ago and she told us to wait 2-3 days and if it got bigger to call...

Like the others said, at least a day- though sometimes it can take a little longer. Compresses and an anti-inflammatory will also help in the meantime!
