We have an 11 hour car ride down to California tomorrow with our 5 yo. I have never taken him on a trip this long in the car before. Any suggestions for keeping him occupied and keeping my sanity?

Plenty of snacks. You can get lap trays that lo could color or play on.  A portable dvd player.
When I take my 7yo dd for long car rides I have to give her Gravol, if not she will vomit all over herself. Also make lots of stops to stretch and pee.

Edit: We also took a PSP & a tablet with data free games. She also used SOs cell phone. Typically she is not allowed to touch it, however he let her catch Pokemon, and hatch egg on Pokemon GO. That kept her occupied for quite some time

Thanks ladies! I have some of his read along Star Wars books packed and his leap frog tablet. Maybe we'll pack a coloring book as well. Also lots of snacks. We'll see how this goes.

We make a similar drive from Portland, OR to just past Sacramento a few times a year to visit DH's family. Been doing it for almost 10 years. We used to drive the 11 hours straight through, but as of two years ago I believe, we stop halfway in Medford and get a hotel over night. It helps everyone's sanity! We also have 3 kids though, 7, 5.5 and 2. We still bring tons of snacks, portable electronics, books, coloring and we play games too. Stopping at rest stops to stretch every 2ish hours helps tons.

Seriously though, the hotel makes a world of a difference. The kids look forward to it every time, we get take out for dinner and then swim in the indoor pool. And restart in the morning rested lol
