Need advice on brushing my 16 month old's teeth! Love My Evan Due May 8; 1 child; Adak, Alaska 39 posts

My 16 month old little boy already has 12 teeth. I've brushed his gums and teeth for months now. A couple of weeks ago he just won't have it, and will not open his mouth and let me brush his teeth!

I never brushed hard or for long periods of time, so I know it's not hurting him. The last doctor appointment we had said to use an electric toothbrush, but my baby is deathly scared of it for some reason.

What do you suggest? I'm worried about cavities, and within these last couple of weeks I've noticed a change in the color of his teeth.

Please help! Thanks in advance!!

Are you still using a manual toothbrush?

Yes, just the manual toothbrush since he's extremely scared of the electric. I've tried to let him play with the electric while it's on and he drops and, screams, and hides behind me... :/

my son went through this for a few months.. I think maybe it's just a phase. We'd literally have to fight him every night. He's 2.5 years old now and he just started being okay with his teeth being brushed/brushing his teeth 2-3 months ago.

Does your son like to do it himself? What we do is all go brush our teeth together, let DS brush some and then one of us takes it from him and brushes them. Then he can have it back for a couple minutes if he wants. That seemed to help us.

He also has about 3-4 different tooth brushes and he likes that he can choose which one he wants to use lol.

I had to hold her down lol. Then she learned to like the electric one. But now she just likes to use my tooth brush

Give him the toothbrush?

I let my 15 month brush his teeth first, (he actually does a pretty decent job I think) and then I go back in after. and he lets me

DD stands on a stool in the bathroom and I turn the sink on so she can play with her hands in the water. She leans her head back and i hold it with one hand and brush with the other. She loves having her teeth brushed though, actually she likes to do it. But if she is distracted with washing her hands she lets me do it no problem. GL.

And letting him pick out his toothbrush might get him more interested. We just use a manual, she sees the dentist and he never recommended an electric one. She knows which toothbrush she wants before we get to the bathroom! LOL She also likes it when dad brushes his teeth with her:)
