Quoting FroggysMommy:" You must not have seen me in debates about food stamps, Im not one to harp and say that people are horrible ... [snip!] ... no one wants to see their boogers, just as they dont want to see others *gasp* get fruit snacks or a soda on food stamps!"
Quoting FroggysMommy:" I find it amazing that everyone knows all these people buying lobster and shrimp and all this stuff on food stamps, especially the most expensive kinds and lots of it......"
I find it amazing that grocery store cashiers pay that much attention to the purchases and payment options their patrons use.
I know quite a few people came in last night and paid with an EBT card and only because I have to type in the total amount to be paid under EBT.
And I can't remember a damn thing any of them purchased.
Quoting I'm me:" That was very thought full of you! I think that if there were more ppl like that who were trying to ... [snip!] ... business since I am paying for your food and I am not getting anything in return lol" the world would be a much better place."
Agreed. We bought a man some food a couple weeks ago and gave him 10 bucks and he started crying when I gave it to him, he just took a big breath and said "Thank you, God bless" and was staring at the ground and didn't open the McDonalds bag until we pulled away. We pulled back into the walmart parking lot (we had bought him mcdonalds from the walmart and a couple drinks, ready meal things, and crackers) and my Mom looked back and he had eaten the sandwich in 2 bites. He would have eaten it in 2 if he could have. We went back in to get him another sandwich but he had walked off somewhere by then. My Mom started crying and said "You know someone is hungry when they eat that fast."
Its like, put yourself in their shoes. And yes, Im sure some people we have helped probably didnt need the help. But id rather make a couple mistakes than turn everyone away because of a few bad apples. I cant help everyone, but I can help some. We always buy dog food for homeless people with dogs. Most of them give their animals food before they will eat themselves.
There are bad people out there that lie, but there are lots of people that need help too. As humans, we should want to help each other. For nothing in return either... just for that good feeling and know that we are teaching our children that helping others smile from a good deed means more than putting something in our own hands out of greed.
Quoting FroggysMommy:" Agreed. We bought a man some food a couple weeks ago and gave him 10 bucks and he started crying when ... [snip!] ... our children that helping others smile from a good deed means more than putting something in our own hands out of greed."
That was nice of you.
I lived in NYC for many years. I cant tell you how many times I bought food for people who were begging only to realize that they weren't interested in the nice food I bought them. I'm NOT saying we shouldn't be kind. I'm just saying that sometimes things don't appear as they seem.
Quoting TheNuge:" <blockquote><b>Quoting FroggysMommy:</b>" You must not have seen me in debates about ... [snip!] ... area. If that's so, you wouldn't be around many people on FS. I don't see them near where I live but I see them elsewhere."
I do, but I also go to stores in different areas because the prices are better. Like where I live is a more wealthy area however, we rarely EVER go to the 2 grocery stores in our town because the sales suck and unless we need something quick, we wait to go to walmart or another store. One of the walmarts we go to is about 15 minutes away and lots, and I mean lots, of homeless and poor people live in the area. Also, the thing about my area is that there is a lot of people who have immigrated here, the language programs in the district are great and are great at Lily's school. So there isn't a lot of medium at her school... there are many kids who come from very wealthy families, and an equal amount of quite poor families but most of those families are parents who do not speak English. There are not many "in between" families, we happen to fit in the in between, lol. The cost of living in our area is insane, it's nice but dear gosh the housing prices are insane. We live right near a couple highways so it's easy to get to the other surrounding cities which is why we don't really shop at our local king soopers, we go to other stores (the produce and availability of products sucks at king soopers anyways, though the produce at walmart sucks more).
Where I went to high school whites were a minority. One high school I briefly went to, I swear there was like 2 black kids in each grade. The school I graduated from... there were kids from all over the world. There were lots, and I mean LOTS of kids that were really struggling to survive and I even remember from back then, I just didn't notice how people paid for their food. I never knew which one of my friends was on free and reduced lunch even though I bet 80% of them were.
Additionally, if you shop sales you can get some good food that isn't like, the bottom of the barrel kind of food. It makes me mad when people think that just because they are on food stamps they should only have the lowest grade, frozen hamburgers that are a couple bucks that really isn't good for you. Now I may not be explaining how meat is well because I don't eat it at all. But I do know that there are some very gross, very cheap kinds of frozen meats that Im surprised anyone would want to FORCE people to eat. When you wait for meat to go on sale (it goes on sale often where I live) you can get good meat for cheaper than cheap, not really good for you frozen meats. My Mom is on food stamps and yes, she buys steaks. However, she has a little butcher old man friend that cuts her meat and gets her good deals, lol. But she can buy steaks here for cheaper than a package of hamburger meat here. She is a sale hound, and the catalina coupons that come out which let you save money from the meat department help out too. So honestly, if you can save money and pay the same or even less than the meat that is frozen, full of preservatives and fats that are horrible for you... why should someone have to eat that just because they are on food stamps? Even a couple dollars more... if you eat healthier (and steak is better to eat than a frozen hamburger that is just gross), then you will be healthier. A treat for dinner every so often isn't a big deal. Its not like they are having daily steaks, lol. And like I said, Ive NEVER seen anyone buy lobster on food stamps. We have gotten shrimp on sale though.
I just don't understand that just because someone is on food stamps they can't have a treat, or can't have REAL food, and can only have food that honestly I wouldn't feed my dog half the time. The more unhealthy food you put in your body the more often you go to the doctor... medicaid prices go up! I just don't get the mindset. So Ive lived in various areas, and just... I have never seen the stuff that people say they see all the time and in the end, people need to eat. I dont know one single person that eats steak every single day and it seems far fetched that all these people on food stamps are doing it all the time.
When my Mom left my Dad we had like hardly no money left to our name and ate crap, complete crap. My Mom hardly ever ate so I could eat. We didnt eat any snacks, we were lucky to have damn koolaid to have anything other than water. I can tell ya, life like that sucks to really want just a damn snack while watching TV (no cable) or doing homework or just laying in bed not doing CRAP. It is tough for kids to understand that, and even more tough to have one box of macaroni left and scarf it down and want another. And also, being tired because you are eating crap and have no fuel at all sucks. So if a family eats, who cares what they have, that's my mindset. I really, honestly, have no problems with a kid getting some oreos or making a birthday cake or even buying a soda because it really sucks to have society look at you and think "Youre poor so you don't deserve anything." And I'll tell ya, it killed my Mom to not be able to get me food.

Oh I know people fake for sure... not too long ago my Mom saw a Mom with a kid at the side of the road and she didnt have money but she did happen to have an extra capri sun and something else from Lily that she didnt eat in the car, so she gave it to the kid. The Mom seemed pissed and even said "We could really use the money" and my Mom was a bit all "huh?" but thought, well... a kid needs food and they said on the sign they needed a hotel so she understood a bit. But she just handed off the snack and left. Later on she is coming back down the same road and it was some time later and she said she saw the Mom walk the kid to a van parked down the road, it was a NICE van, she said it had to of been a 2012 model. Opens the door, sees 2 other kids inside. The kid that was outside pulls off his dirty shirt, passes it off to the kid inside and they switch places. My Mom felt like a d**k. The Mom was using her kids and dirty clothes to get money and everything was fine. So yeah, shit happens, people are f**king dicks. Thats why we dont give to everyone (though we usually do give at least a small bag of dog food to everyone we see with dogs) but if we do... we hope it's in good faith and works. I just have to trust that in my heart I'm doing the right thing and in their hearts, hopefully they realize that they are doing wrong and change.
One can only hope!!

You are mischaracterizing the intentions of most of those who want limits on what FS can be used for. It's not to "force" anything and it's not to encourage crap and it's not a act to punish poor people or make a statement about who deserves what.
FS should be used to help those going through a difficult time to not go hungry. It should be to meet very basic needs. I would prefer the WIC-style plus some government food depots to reach places where grocery stores were scarce.
I'm human and I also like junk food and I'm a softy. I hate the idea of a kid not having a popsicle. But, I also hate knowing what our entitlement programs have caused and the degree to which people have become dependent upon "the system." There is just no way to justify allowing soda and SpongeBob cakes to be purchased with FS. The only explanation can be found in extreme liberal policies PLUS lobbyists from big food companies and grocery stores that make lots of money off of garbage-food bought with FS.
Public policy should not be based on the emotion but on what is good for the public. FS for all "food" products in the store is NOT good public policy.
I bought whole wheat carrot cake cupcakes today for my son, 4/$2.50, I'm going to hell :D

I bought a treat with food stamps. So I'm ungrateful, and evil, and worthless.

I'm saving seats, you want me to save you one? lol
Anyway, I think there is a lot of misconceptions about what people spend FS on. Like a couple of bad eggs ruin it for the rest of us who need assistance sort of deal. People should be allowed to spend it on whatever they are allowed to spend it on (even if we don't agree with it). If they want to feed an army that is up to them. I wish I didn't have to be on FS honestly but I can't work so there is only one income coming in.
Quoting I'm His Amy He's My Rory:" I'm curious here.. And putting it in D&D because, well, they always get heated lol. I know a LOT ... [snip!] ... company, family, friends, etc over for a meal? I mean seeing as it's other peoples' place to dictate how they're used and all."
Sure, I see no issue with them having family over for a meal.
