I drive a '12 VW Jetta Sportwagen and I'm totally in love with it. I don't like SUV's much, but this has just as much room and is amazing on gas. I can fit 3 kids in it easily with room i the back for camping/beach gear/whatever. We also have an older Mercedes wagon that has 7 seats. I never drive it because I don't do stick, but my husband says it's fabulous.

I drive an 07' ford freestar and love it. It's roomy. Has 2 front bucket seats. The middle bucket seats and a back bench seat that can fold down. I haven't calculated mpg but it seems pretty good. We payed $4995 for ours.

We're getting a Acura MDX...not great gas milage but it seems to be a solid car. Look into the Highlander Hybrid. My FIL has one and loves it and he got a great deal

We just traded in my Ford Explorer for a Honda Odyssey. We needed something roomier and kid friendly that got good gas mileage. We got the fully loaded model with power everything and DVD players for the kids. We have seating for 8 and one seat in the middle row folds down and stores away. We live in snow country (Upper Michigan) we get close to 300+ inches of snow a year and it handles amazingly in the winter. We put really good snow tires on it and have never had a problem with it. If it can handle an Upper Michigan winter I have no question that it can handle a Illinois winter. Once you get an AWD there goes your gas mileage.

I traded my 2d chevy cobalt in for a chevy traverse. Loved it. Planning on getting another when we get back stateside. It's roomy enough for a cross country trip with my 2 kids (both in carseats at the time), my parents, little sister, niece, and myself. Even with all our luggage in the back we all fit comfortably. It was great on gas, for as big as it was.
