Starting baby food Magnesium C, IL, United States 8499 posts

My niece is 3.5 months old (1.5 month adjusted) and her Pedi suggested we start adding 1 baby teaspoon of Gerber rice to her 4 oz bottles due to spitting up. Her Pedi has not mentioned anything about starting baby food, and I honestly don't think she's ready for it but her mom is eager to start her on it..

My nephew who is 3.5 months old (2.5 months adjusted) was recommended to start baby food around 5 to 6 months of age (4-5 months adjusted). His mom started him on baby food on Monday because she thinks he's ready..

Now a friend of ours has a little boy who is 4 months old (1 month adjusted) and his Pedi said it was OK to start him on baby food.

For those of you who had a premature baby, what age & adjusted age did you start your LO on baby food? Is it better to wait a year to introduce solids or OK to start them at 4 months old regardless of their set back?

My baby Dr put her on rice cereal in her bottle due to spitting up...that was when she was 4 months...however that didn't work. what did work fairly well was switching her formula to the AR brand made especially for babies that spit up. she's 6 months now and i still haven't started feeding her baby food yet. but i think she's finally ready so we'll see how that goes lol. i don't get why moms try to make their baby grow up faster then need be. i want my daughter to stay a baby :-(

6 months is generally the recommended age to start solids...anything before that, especially on here, is extremely frowned upon. I didn't have a premie, but I started solids at 4 months. I did my own research and everything I read said 4-6 months is ok. Formula was still his main source of nutrition until close to a year tho.

Eff that dude. Way too young. Time for some new pediatricians.

My daughter has HORRIBLE acid reflux. Her pedi put her on rice cereal (in the bottle) at 2 months. She started solids at 3 months. My son started solids at 3 months as well.

They suggest 4-6 months but honestly it's when your baby is ready. My kids neither had any trouble with it what so ever.

The dietician at the NICU told us to wait until 4-6 months adjusted. Cereal in the bottle is for suspected acid reflux. Their little bodies aren't ready for food before then.

my pedi told us to start solids at 4 months
not for reflux, or any special reason, but that's their standard recommendation: introduce solids at 4 months.
my babies were born 8 weeks early.
in terms of solids, i don't think we use adjusted age. it's one of the few places where it is not necessary to adjust because they have actually been eating since being born, so their digestive systems are as old as they actually are.
