Depends on what she meant from "top to bottom" i guess. Because to me, that means doing the deep cleaning that doesn't get done often, like vacuuming behind the fridge and cleaning the baseboards with a toothbrush. Not stuff she should be doing with my kid, no.
Quoting .Colleen.:" it would depend on alot of things: Age of the kid How much you pay Is it daycare or preschool? ... [snip!] ... I was fine with my mom cleaning her house and watching my kids, but I am not a fan of dirt and disorganization so......."
I was okay with it too when my Mom watched his son, but she only had to listen across the room for one children. I pictured this place being a daycare, with up to 10 kids, and I don't think that is as safe. When I was a nanny the parents asked me if I could start deep cleaning their house, and it was a challenge to watch two kids (one of them not being mine, more nervewracking) and do a thorough cleaning. How do you do that with that many kids that aren't yours/family?
Well if it's a home daycare there probably aren't many kids there. After a certain amount of kids you have to have a second person there to help.
So either this lady doesn't have many kids or has a helper. Either way I wouldn't care if she was cleaning while my kid was there as long as the kids couldn't get to the cleaners.
Usually home daycares are nothing more than someone just babysitting your kids. There's not usually much educational going on. Maybe one or two activities, but nothing like a actual preschool.

Here the ratio is 8:1 if the kids are between 2-6, or 5:1 if they're newborn to 2.
That's a lot of kids to me.

Yeah it's a lot, but a lot of homes dont have that many at one time (from my experience) Or the kids may be watching Barney or something. Or maybe the lady said she's cleaning top to bottom, but in realty is only hittin the high points lol. I do that.
I would have commented on her status asking where the kids were and what they were doing. This would let her know your keeping your eye on her.
Um, maybe the kid was sleeping? Watching a movie? Doing something else? Kids don't want you in their face all day, they need some space. If you want a structured educational environment you will have to enroll her in a daycare facility with curriculum. A home babysitter is not a teacher.
