Because we live in a rape culture in which women are shamed for being raped often. So it leads to be being less desiring to report it. When a judge suggests your dress might of led to being raped, or the attacker is praised in school for being a good kid you are going to ruin with your accusation then why would you want to bother? That sadly plays a HUGE part in all of this. People should always assume the girl is telling the truth, until evidence says otherwise. The other issue is rape is hard to prove in court.

Thank you for the website with the statistics, it was helpful.

So back to my last question, do you guys think a petition pushing for harsher punishments would do any good? Maybe calling/writing state governments?

Honestly? No, I don't believe it would. I don't see how that would stop rapists.

Not even lower the rate as a deterrent?

What about incorporating rape education with the current sex ed curriculum? Self-defense classes for girls in schools in cooperation with phys ed starting in like high school? Maybe even mandating annual exams for females starting at a young age to check for sexual abuse? That's probably a bit much..

Harsher punishments (as in death), educating and putting morals into our sons, teaching our girls and boys what a dangerous situation could be, and self defense seem good. NONE of these are being done here (or at least on a very small scale). Also, like others have said not blaming the victim.

I agree whats so difficult is so much rape happens from family members and they are not reported. Or the girls/boys are not believed :(

Eta: by educating what a dangerous situation would be: don't be alone with someone your uncomfortable with, don't become drunk/high, don't walk down alley ways by yourself, etc.

I agree, or people are taught to be ashamed of something happening to them so they don't tell anyone. It is very sad.

If all women carried a firearm on their person at all times... I guarantee we would see a major decline in the number of rape victims.

That's exactly the reason SO bought me a taser. I work at night and it's a pretty isolated area.
