So i chose to get prego with our second knowing ill be turning 21 while pregnant. im not huge on drinking but im not going to lie i cant wait to go to a place, get carded and order a yummy looking drink i have been looking at since i was little! lol BUT i will be breast feeding after i have her. i plan on waiting to have a drink until after she takes the bottle so i can just pump and dump the milk with the 1 or 2 drinks in it and not worry about her starving or something.

my main thing here is has anyone tried those strips that you test your milk with? i dont plan on drinking alot. just 1 or 2 of those drinks and i dont know who much alcohol is really in them. so i dont want to pump and dump if i really dont need to. or pump and dump too early then end up giving her the bad stuff? seems confusing so i wanted to try the strips to to be sure she gets the good stuff.

do they work?expensive?worth it? How long does alcohol stay in your milk?

I haven't tried the strips but I heard they were a waste of money. You don't need to pump and dump. Alcohol leaves your system kinda quick. The general rule is if you can drive you can nurse.

You can have a drink and still breastfeed! Especially those big pretty fruity ones they don't have muh alcohol in them. The rule of thumb is if you can drive you can BF

Have one drink, it's fine. If you're going to get drunk, then have some back up milk to bottle feed.

You shouldn't need to pump and dump at all. Alcohol leaves your breastmilk the same as it leaves your system. If you are "sober", your milk is "sober".
That being said, depending on how long you've been breastfeeding, you might want to pump if you think skipping a feeding will mess up your supply.

I haven't tried the strips.

Alcohol leaves your milk the same as it leaves your blood. It takes time. Pumping and dumping won't get rid of the "bad milk". I've always followed the general rule of waiting 2 hours after finishing 1 drink. 4 hours if you were to drink 2....some people go by if you're sober enough to drive, you're sober enough to breastfeed.

i have a question, what if you want to get completely wasted drunk and your breastfeeding? would you just store up some milk in preparation knowing your later milk wont be good?

Yeah I'd pump earlier in the day. The last time I got drunk it was NyE and I went out at 8pm and didn't BF dd until 9am lol

So here is a link from AAP and their stance/suggestions related to alcohol while breastfeeding. The main idea is that alcohol can dehydrate you so if you were a habitual drinker it could affect your milk supply. But as others mentioned 1-2 drinks is not a big deal... 8) Enjoy your birthday drink!

my friend is saying she wants like.
2 shots
a mudslide and maybe a fruity drink
not sure how mixing those would go BUT we want a tad of a a buzz. but not drunk. but not just full of liquid either lol

would you still do the 2 hours after each drink? like... 6 hours all together?
or just go by if you can drive you can nurse?
or do you go by both?

Well that is probably like the equivelant of 5-6 servings of alcohol...keep in mind those fruity drinks usually have more than one shot of alcohol in them when they are mixed. If you're not much of a drinker and are a smaller sized person you will be drunk on that...maybe try and pump some milk before hand that way you dont have to stress if your baby is hungry and you're still a little buzzed and worried about nursing. That way you are prepared in advance in the event you dont feel right about nursing..

I def plan on waiting until after she takes the bottle so i can have some pumped for her just incase! Trust me lol we are both small. we could always do the shot AFTER we have our drink or two if were not buzzed by then. right? no need to do it all right off . Just want to get out for a mommy date at Apple bees or something and have a Chocolate Lava cake as well! mmmm mmmm mmmm! <3 lol

I've had a few drinks and breastfed at the same time. I never even get a buzz though I sometimes drink wine coolers and will have one and breastfeed at the same time too. I don't think you have anything to worry about unless your going to be going out and getting smashed
