This could very well be a stupid question but here goes.

I know you can design your own cups and plates etc. by using permanent marker and baking it for 30 minutes, but is it only the black one you can use, or do the other colors work as well? I just don't want any weird bleeding, or them to fade after a washing or 2.

You can use other colours.. but even with black you have to be careful. I made some and the bastards washed away when I was cleaning dishes.. SIL also made us some cute plates for Santa's cookies at xmas and they too faded/scratched when being washed :(. Maybe baking them twice would help? I'm honestly not sure.

Aww poo. Well, I do plan on getting Dollar Store dishes cuz well... they're a dollar, so if I really need to, I can redo them. I'm just trying to think of things to keep the kids entertained, since it's spring break.

Yeah that's what I did.. not worried about the dishes or anything it used more just bummed that they faded.. especially the ones from Christmas because they were sooo cute! Ah well. :) Maybe someone will have some insight as to how to keep the designs on!

These are better than Sharpies...but they are also pricey.

I've never made them but maybe handwash instead of dishwasher?

handwashing still wipes it away.

Try spraying a couple of layers of Minwax "polycrylic".
I've paint a couple of sets and used it, it protects the design. If you want to get a smoother finish, you can sand it with a sheet of fine sand paper. I haven't tried it with permanent markers, but I think if you bake it, then spray the polycrylic, it might help.
