Quoting Dovahkiin:" By "survive on one's own", it means they can breathe and physically function outside of the womb. It doesn't mean little Charlie Jr., 5 weeks old, is going to get a job and support himself. "

LOL.

I personally wasn't even talking about being able to breathe on their own. I would consider a life that can be saved with medical intervention to still be a life. If they're on a breathing machine, they're not technically surviving on their own, but they are still alive.

Quoting ⚓ Sarah ⚓:" It really happens, i'm not sure how its extreme?"

Well, I'm going to cautiously say that the majority of abortions happen for other reasons than rape or possible pregnancy fatality. So in that case, it is not the general reason for having an abortion. To be honest, and I'll say this as a woman who's had quite a few friends get abortions, the general reason to have one is so that you don't deal with everything that comes with pregnancy. NOT because you were raped, or that you have some rare condition that will kill you if you deliver the child. Feel free to prove otherwise! :D

True. Technically anything with a metabolic system is alive.

Random science fact: You know how when you buy a cleaner, sometimes they advertise it "kills 99.9% of bacteria and viruses"? Well, that's completely false advertising, because viruses aren't actually alive. So they can't be "killed!" Viruses attach themselves to a living cell; without that cell, they simply "exist."

Sorry, nerd moment over.

At conception.
For me it's biblical, or religious, however you'd like to put it.
"Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, before you we're born I set you apart, I appointed you as a prophet to the nations." Jeremiah 1:5
"Your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in Your book, before one of them came to be." Psalm 139:16
To me, it's saying that God formed us from the beginning, we were each given a soul from the moment we were conceived, and we are each considered a human being in his eyes from the moment of our conception. The site below gives some good info on the biblical point of view, and it sites a lot more verses if you need them.

Agreed.

Lol, that was strangle ironic...My oldest son's name is Charlie.

Okay, so I'll keep pressing here, and hope I'm not being an ass. :D If a child is, say, born with an underdeveloped lung, does that then leave him a fetus, rather than a baby?

What about a responsibility to the children I already have? Say I have sex and regardless of whatever precautions I take, I get pregnant. Me having that baby is going to put me into trouble financially, because I can't afford it. Also because I'd have to take time off of work (because I know you'll argue adoption). And probably emotionally, because, hey, that's a lot to worry about.

Should I put the needs of the fetus above the needs of my already living, breathing, 3 and 4 year old children?

Try explaining it to kids, they literally stare at you like you told them they have to eat live baby seals for lunch.

No, I already asked a similar question a few pages back.

If it is born, it is a baby, regardless if it is living, deceased, or will be deceased within a few minutes.
