Yup. They can't even afford Frontline or similar so the pets always get fleas ....ask me how I know. :)

Why would someone own a pet that they couldn't afford to feed? With the tremendous amount of debt that this country is in I would not want to have the American taxpayers pay for my pet.

Oh, tell me about it. I lived in a duplex a couple if years ago and the person next to me had 3 dogs. They were covered and she never did anything to care for them. We could get the shit bit out of us during the summer when we went into our back yard.

Either way, my pet is not the financial responsibility of anyone else.

I completely agree with you.

maybe if you would've read the article, you would know that it's through private donations, not the government. it's also not uncommon for people to get pets when they are well off and care afford them, and then hit a rough patch in life where they need help

I agree. Definitely doesn't change the fact that it is a terrible experience when "life happens" and you have to walk away from your animal in order to be responsible.

When life happens tough decisions have to be made, and that stinks, but I still wouldn't expect anyone to hold the financial burden of my pets.

If you are having a hard time affording food for your animal you are probably struggling in other areas of your life. It would be a hard decision to give your pet away. But you are spending money on an animal that could help you feed your family or pay your bills.

And as I said, I agree.

That is what it came down to for us. Family comes first, even before the animals who feel like family. There's really no excuse. Our dog also required allergy medication, and it was just too much. I have a ton of compassion for people who are in that situation though, as I've been there, and I know how badly it all hurts.

I couldn't imagine. Especially having children that are attached to the pet. It has to be very hard. But you made that tough decision for the best of your family. The sad thing is many people don't.

My daughter still talks about it. We had a "goodbye party" for him, and the new family came over so my daughter could meet them. There were a lot of tears. She still talks about when "Wyatt walked with the rope to his new car." Sad stuff.

We did finally get another dog (well after DH got another job, of course. Almost two years later..) and some of that pain has gone away. I'm not sure I'll ever really forgive myself though. I still wish things could have been different.

This was them at our goodbye party.
