How early can an ultrasound detect multiples? Thirteen and Boo 1 child; California 6087 posts

My coworker is having twins, and we both swear that she is much further along than she's been told.

She had an ultrasound at 4ish weeks, and they told her she was having fraternal twins, but for some reason I thought you usually couldn't detect that until 8 weeks or so?

She thinks, based off of her body (she has irregular periods) and how she felt at the time, that she's a month ahead of what the doctor is saying.

Unlikely. They measure the sac etc during the scans and usually thats more accurate than going by your lmp. Why does she think shes further along?

I went in at 3 weeks pregnant & they couldn't see anything via ultrasound apart from a thickened uterine lining... I'm not sure if they could see anything at 4 weeks, i was told they wouldn't be able to see anything until at least 5w.

I went back at 6 weeks i think & they could see the sack/foetal pole or something.

That was via vaginal u/s & only with one baby, not multiples.

ETA:
I was 7w6d when they saw something, i was told not to come back before 5 weeks because they wouldn't be able to see anything. (just had to check my BG page for details haha)

I'm pretty sure that you can see twins at any point in gestation

And a US is way more accurate than LMP

I also thought you had to be 5+ weeks to see an embryo. They are still pretty damn tiny then

Early ultrasounds are the best detection of EDDs.

My sister just found out she was pregnant, went to the ER last Wednesday because she was bleeding. Found out that she is approximately 4-5 weeks along and that she was definately having twins, possibley triplets. The ultrasound tech couldn't get a good angle on the "third" sac, but there were definately two distinct sacs.

How exciting! You and your sister are both having twins! That's so neat.

It was definately a surprise!! We knew that twins ran in the family, but this is crazy! Our great Aunts are twins, and we have cousins that are twins. Our Mom said we're making her feel old, because we are giving her so many grandbabies, lol. My sister's new additions will give our Mom 9 grandbabies.
