What's the difference between tricare prime and tricare standard?

Is there any way I could tell what kind of tricare we have without calling them and asking?lol

Quoting Mel Dee:" Your husband should know! Otherwise, you probably will have to call and double check! I believe Prime ... [snip!] ... Standard is being able to go off base but sometimes you need to pay a tiny % of the amount, depending on what you're getting."

With prime you can also be seen off base if the services you need can not be met on base or if you live more then 40 miles from base.

It's not on DH's LES.

Prime you have to get approvals to go to doctors but have less co-pay, standard you can go to any doctor without approvals and the co-pay is more. I learned this the hard way...my medical bills are piled up because they put me on standard instead of prime

I just dropped to Standard from Prime because I didn't want to be seen on base for maternity care. Maternity is at least covered 100% on standard here, but copays apply to everything else.

Might be an overseas thing? Idk but that's what it says in all my paperwork from the bases and the Tricare office.

Are you going to the military treatment facility? Because if you are, that would explain not being charged.

ETA
If I remember right, with standard, cost share is only if you see a civilian provider.
